That's So Raven is an American sitcom television show broadcast on the Disney Channel. The plot revolves around fashionable teenager Raven Baxter's schemes to get herself, her friends, or family members, out of a wacky situation, usually by using her psychic powers and her skills as a master of disguise. The show ended production in January 2006, but there will be more new episodes that will go on until 2006.

The show is aired in the UK on the British-version of the Disney Channel, CITV, and also on the Family Channel. The first three seasons were produced by Brookwell McNamara Entertainment, and the fourth season was produced by That's So Production (itself a part of Brookwell McNamara Entertainment) and Warren & Rinsler Productions.

Production

The show was first aired in the United States on January 17 2003. However, some episodes in the first season had been broadcast earlier in the United Kingdom, during 2002. The show is popular in the United States, but also in many other countries and regions of the world including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Europe, New Zealand and Asia. It is the highest rated series on Disney Channel, ahead of the popular Lizzie McGuire. However, the show is ending in 2007 after becoming Disney's longest running show with four seasons, the first series to achieve this feat.*

There have been 100 episodes of That's So Raven, which is more than the usual 65 episodes of Disney shows. The only other Disney shows to achieve this are Dumbo's Circus (which aired 120 episodes on Disney Channel between 1985-1995), DuckTales, and recently, Kim Possible (announced November 2005).

Story structure

Each episode is broken up into different segments as Raven or other characters deal with situations. Raven is primarily the focus of the story, and the episodes also focus on whatever visions she experiences. The visions usually involve whatever Raven is thinking about at a particular point in time. After the visions occur, one of several things will happen: the vision will come true irrespective of any attempts to prevent it, Raven tries to stop it only to make it come true (a paradox), or the outcome is affected in some way.

There is some evidence of "Chuck Cunningham syndrome", such as the disappearance of Mr. Lawler, who provided comic relief in some early episodes but was removed for unknown reasons. There are characters that appeared at least once as an important role, but never returned. Also, as of season four, Raven's mother Tanya is out of the show, due to her quitting (see below).

For the fourth season, Raven-Symoné became producer of her own show, helping out more for the creative ideas on That's So Raven. In the fourth season of the show her character Raven Baxter, an aspiring fashion designer, achieves the dream of a lifetime when she begins working for fictional fashion designer Donna Cabonna (played by Anne-Marie Johnson of JAG and In Living Color fame). Production of the fourth season began in 2005, and ended in early 2006. That's So Raven started its fourth season on President's Day (February 20) with the episode Raven, Sydney, And The Man. Production was switched to the newly made That's So Productions and the show averaged 4.5 million viewers.

Cast

Main characters

Raven Baxter (played by Raven-Symoné)
Raven Lydia Baxter is the main character of the series. Raven is a teenage girl who possesses psychic powers to see into the future. She is an aspiring fashion designer. Her best friends are Edward "Eddie" Thomas and Chelsea Daniels. Raven has one sibling, Cory. In the show, Raven's psychic powers allow her to catch a glimpse of the future. This is characterized by her going into a blank stare, and the TV audience sees the vision. She has no real control over the visions, but the visions usually involve whatever she's thinking about at the moment she gets a vision. Raven learned that her Grandma Viv (Jennifer Lewis) is also a psychic, but her own mother is not, meaning that the psychic power skipped a generation. In addition to being an aspiring fashion designer, she is also a master of disguise, a skill that comes in handy mainly because of the trouble her visions can cause. She spent a day working as an assistant teacher and has a club at the community center where she teaches Sydney how to become a fashion designer. It has been noticed that Raven has had three cell phones. She has only had one major boyfriend Devon Carter (Lil' J). Their relationship came to a sudden halt near the end of Season 2 when Devon's father remarried and Devon moved to Seattle, WA as a result. However, near the conclusion of Season 3, Devon returned to San Francisco to surprise Raven. Devon revealed that his father would come to San Francisco on business, so Devon would have more opportunities to see her. Their relationship has apparently resumed. Her main nemeses are Alana (Adrienne Bailon), Bianca (Erica Rivera), and their posse: Muffy (Ashley Drane) and Loca (Andrea Edwards). Her new nemisis is Tiffany (Jodi Shilling), who is unnecessarily competing with Raven to be Donna's favorite assistant. It's also been noted that Raven is super allergic to mushrooms. It was also shown that Raven was shown with over 5 boyfriends throughout the show.

Eddie Thomas (played by Orlando Brown)
Eddie Thomas is the male best friend of Raven Baxter and Chelsea Daniels. He is an aspiring rapper and is a member of the school's basketball team. He spent a day as a furniture salesman and sold the Baxter's furniture for some new Italian furniture. He also has a club at the community school to teach the children to rap. He has had one girlfriend, Chantel (Drew Sidora) and also unexpectedly had a relationship with Loca. He has been seen to give Raven's younger brother, Cory, bad advice, and either is introduced in an episode with Chelsea and Raven or entering in with Cory.

Chelsea Daniels (played by Anneliese van der Pol)
Chelsea Ophelia Daniels is Raven Baxter's and Eddie Thomas's best friend. She is known to be a vegetarian and an environmentalist. She works at the community dog daycare. She also spent a day working as a police officer and has a club called the "Whale Club" at the community center. Most of the time her character is portrayed as dimwitted and then stuns her friends with something they never thought she could do. She is an experienced bull rider and ping-pong player. She also ran for class president against Ben Sturky. She has had quite a few boyfriends during the series including Jake (Ricky Ullman) as seen in On Top of Old Oakey, Sam (Mike Erwin) in A Dog By Any Other Name, and Ben in Double Vision. She is also a pet lover and does not like to harm animals. However in one episode she stated "pepperoni was good".

Cory Baxter (played by Kyle Massey)
Cory is the only sibling of Raven Baxter. His best friends are Larry (David Henrie) and William (Frankie Ryan Manriquez). During his 13th birthday he had a "Bro-Mitzvah" in order to get money but later donated that money to the community center. He happens to be very wealthy. He also knows how to do the fictional "Yak Dance of Creponia". He is usually picking on Raven more in the earlier part of the show than in the later. He also had a crush on Chelsea Daniels early in the show. In seasons three and four he had a girlfriend Cindy (Jordyn Coleman). In season four, Cory's new rival is introduced in Juicier Consequences.

Victor Baxter (played by Rondell Sheridan)
Victor Baxter is the father of Raven and Cory Baxter. His profession is a chef. He appeared on local television cooking and on national television in "Captain Cook-off's Kitchen Challenge". In season two, he became the owner of a restaurant called The Chill Grill and a mobile spin-off, "The Chill Grill on Wheels". He also had directed a commercial for the Chill Grill starring Eddie Thomas and Chelsea Daniels.

Tanya Baxter (played by T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh)
Tanya Baxter is the mother of Raven and Cory Baxter. Her previous jobs include being an English teacher; in season one she was appeared as a housewife, and in one episode she became a substitute teacher at Bayside High School (the fictional school in which Raven, Eddie, Chelsea and Cory attend). In season two, she became hostess at her husband Victor's restaurant, The Chill Grill. In season three, Tanya decided to attend law school. Keymáh quit the show at the end of season three and her character was written out (it was said that Tanya had travelled to Britain to study law).

Señorita Rodriguez (played by Rose Abdoo)
Señorita Rodriguez is the Spanish teacher of Chelsea Daniels, Eddie Thomas, and Raven Baxter. She is also the head of the "Bayside Barracudian Newspaper", the Drama Club teacher, the advisor of the "Bayside Outdoor Club", and "FLUB" (Future Leaders United in Business) Club. She is often cracking jokes, and retailers say she takes too many freebies.

Mr. Petracelli (played by Ernie Sabella)
Mr. Petracelli was Raven, Eddie, and Chelsea's History teacher in season one. He appeared in just two episodes ("Mother Dearest" and "Escape Claus"). He occasionally cracks his neck in a weird, disgusting way. He had played Santa Claus in the Christmas episode "Escape Claus" in which he was taking a day off from school to play Santa Claus and caught Eddie, Raven, and Chelsea cutting school for a necklace Raven needed to get. It ended up being the real Santa Claus who caught Raven and her friends dressed up as Mr. Petracelli. He ended up giving Raven a gift that would make her go back in time to change the past at the end of that episode.

Mr. Wizowski (played by Stuart Pankin)
Mr. Wizowski was Raven, Chelsea, and Eddie's English teacher in season two. He only appeared in two episodes ("Out Of Control" and "The Lying Game"). He is often clumsy and forgets things. In the episode "Out Of Control", He had misplaced the book reports of his class, which he was suppose to grade. In "The Lying Game", he had mismatched the classes' career replacement tests.

Dr. Sleevemore (played by Brian George)
Dr. Sleevemore is a psychic doctor who treats Raven's visions. He appeared in two episodes (one in season 1 and one in season 3). In the season one episode "Saving Psychic Raven", Raven started attending his Institute for Psychic Research, where she met other teen psychics just like her. Raven decides not to go to the institute at the end of the episode. Dr. Sleevemore is not seen nor mentioned again until the season three episode "Vision Impossible", when Raven has trouble with her visions and need help so he decides to pay a visit and help Raven.

Devon Carter (played by Lil' J)
Devon Carter is Raven's boyfriend. He used to have braces and bad acne, but after he had his braces removed and his face 'cleared up', Raven and Alana were both fighting to be his girlfriend. He became Raven's boyfriend eventually, and continued to be after he moved to Seattle. His favorite food is egg rolls.

Alana (played by Adrienne Bailon)
Alana is the snobby rival of Raven Baxter. She finds pleasure in teasing and bullying Raven. She hangs out with her bullying posse, Loca & Muffy. She was introduced in season two of the series. It was revealed in the episode Run Raven Run, that like Kate Saunders and Lizzie on Lizzie McGuire, Alana and Raven were once friends back in elementary school but a fourth grade play that had them both competing for the role of the tooth fairy(which Raven got while Alana was tooth decay) would ruin they're friendship. Alana and Raven almost became friends when Raven joined Alana's posse (in the episode "Clothes Minded") when Chelsea and Eddie did not stand up with her. Alana and her posse spent the night at Raven's house (in the episode "Shake, Rattle, and Rae") and almost became back friends again until Alana said the score was 1-0. Her office is located in one of the girls bathrooms at Bayside. She left in season three because she was so bad, she had to attend military school. She was replaced by Bianca.

Muffy (played by Ashley Drane)
Muffy is a member of Alana and Bianca's posse. She usually records everything for Alana. Muffy joined Bianca's posse when Alana was sent to military school. She is known to be obsessed with the fictional boy band "Boyz in Motion". She has also took over as Raven's school nemisis, as their is no longer any Bianca.

Loca (played by Andrea Edwards)
Loca is a member of Alana and Bianca's posse. She usually is tough and does the bad work for Alana. Loca joined Bianca's posse when Alana was sent to military school. She is a tall girl who nobody likes to mess with. She is also romantically interested in Eddie. She likes to give him arm punches every time she sees him (which are painful for him). Like Muffy, she is obsessed with "Boyz in Motion".

Bianca (played by Erica Rivera)
Bianca took over as Raven's foremost enemy when Alana was sent to military school and became Raven's new rival. She reportedly was so bad she was kicked out of military school. She only appeared in two episodes in season three ("Boyz In Commotion" and "Gettin' Outta Dodge").

Boyz 'n Motion (played by Michael Copon, Ryan Hansen and Columbus Short)
The Boyz in Motion are a popular boy band comprised of Ricky, Tre, and JJJ (he states that the third 'J' is silent). In the episode "Boyz In Commotion", they spent a couple of nights at Raven's house because of all the chasing fans. Raven later got them to perform at a annual concert at Bayside. In season four, (in the episode "Be Prepared") Raven caused them to break up, then come back together for a music video Donna Cabonna was doing for Maria Shriver.

Larry (played by David Henrie)
Larry is one of Cory's best friends and is Jewish. He can play the guitar. He also has a yellow sweater he wears all the time during the winter.

Stanley (played by Bobbe' J. Thompson)
Stanley is Eddie's neighbor and a pest of Raven and Cory. He's a spoiled, selfish, rude, chauvinistic brat who always gets his way. He was originally brought in to be someone for Raven's pesky friend, Sierra, to play with, but he was much more interested in Raven. He is a young salesman usually tricking Cory into buying something that is bad. He is suppose to be playing a 5 or 6 year old (revealed in Stark Raven Mad).

Sierra (played by Juliette Goglia)
Sierra is Raven's neighbor and is known to bother her. She has a crush on Stanley. Sierra only appeared in two episodes (Stark Raven Mad and "Opportunity Shocks").

Cindy (played by Jordyn Coleman)
Cindy is Cory's girlfriend. She is a straight A student. She and Cory thought that since they were going to different schools that they should see other people, and she started dating another boy, Tyler. Cory went out with Brittany. However, Cory and Cindy later got back together.

Chantel (played by Drew Sidora)
Chantel is Eddie's girlfriend. She is known to eat a lot, despite her thin appearance. She broke up with Eddie, then later got back with him. She appears in four episodes (all in season 3), "Psychic Eye For The Sloppy Guy", "They Work Hard For His Honey", "Mismatch Maker", and "Save the Last Dance".

Sydney (played by Sydney Park)
Sydney is a girl at the community center whose mentor is Raven. Ever since she met Raven, she has embarrassed her by insulting her. When Raven found out that Sydney was a foster child, they're friendship grew. She is an aspiring comedian and performed at Cory's Bro-Mitzvah.

Donna Cabonna (played by Anne-Marie Johnson)
Donna Cabonna is a world renowned fashion designer and Raven's boss. She is a spoof off of real life designer Donna Karen. She has a dog named Coco. She drove Raven mad in one episode when she made Raven her brief personnal assistant because Tiffany had to go on a business trip which caused Raven to almost break up with her boyfriend (Devon Carter). Donna also has a boyfriend named Teddy, who is much shorter than her.

Tiffany (played by Jodi Shilling)
Tiffany is Donna's main assistiant and Raven's new nemisis. Ever since they met, Tiffany and Raven have never gotten along. On Raven's first day at the job (in the episode "Dues & Dont's"), Tiffany lied to Raven and said that she had a private office when it was really Donna Cabonna's office. They are now competing to be Donna's favorite assistant.

Continuity errors

Disappearing significant others

  • In the pilot episode of That's So Raven entitled "The Smell of Victory", Eddie begins dating a girl named Crystal (played by Christel Khalil). She is neither seen nor mentioned again until the season two episode "The Dating Shame", When Crystal along with best friend Claudia compete against Raven and Chelsea to go out with a guy named Chad in the fictional dating show Terma-Date. The only other time Crystal was mentioned was during the beginning of the third season episode, "Point Of No Return", when Raven tells her dad about a boy asking another girl to Crystal's party.
  • In the episode "Mr. Perfect", Raven dates a guy named Andre. During the course of that episode they break-up and then get back together in the end. After that episode Andre is neither seen nor mentioned again.
  • In the episode "Double Vision", Chelsea begins to date a guy named Ben who has the same psychic powers as Raven. For some reason he is neither seen nor mentioned again after that episode.

Disappearing memorable characters

  • Tanya Baxter (T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh) left the show after her last episode "Hizzouse Party"; she said the show was going nowhere and she quit. She was mentioned many times in the future but has not been seen since leaving.
  • Mr. Lawler (Wesley Mann), a popular recurring character during the early episodes of That's So Raven, was neither seen nor mentioned again after the episode "Clothes Minded".
  • Ben "Stinky" Sturky (Joshua Harto) disappeared after three episodes in the first season.
  • Alana disappeared in season two, because "she was so bad, she got sent to military school" (and was replaced by Bianca who was "so bad, she got kicked out of miltary school").

Filming mistakes

  • At the end of the episode "If I Only Had a Job", Raven takes hold of Cory's hat and wiggles it around. In the next shot Raven is seen holding on to Cory's cheek instead.
  • When the exterior of the Baxter house is showing the porch, the walkway goes to the right. But when the house is shown from the street, the porch has a stairway that goes to the left.
  • In the episode "Unhappy Medium", Cory brings in an elephant for Victor so he can advertise for The Chill Grill. In the living room, there isn't any past pictures on the wall.
  • In the episode "Mismatch Maker", Cory finds a dog. As the dog picks out the correct money, you can hear its trainer saying "good boy", not Cory.
  • In the episode "If I Only Had A Job", Raven has a vision near the end of Victor having a restaurant called "Baxter's Place" but in the next season Victor's restaurant is called "The Chill Grill".
  • In the episode "To See or Not to See", Raven's psychic grandma comes to town, the grandma and Cory fight with lightsaber-esque trinkets (like in Star Wars). They step out of the living room and into the kitchen, leaving the door into the living room open. All of the furniture, rugs, and paintings are gone, and the room is blank. In the next shot, everything is back to normal.
  • In the episode "A Dog By Another Name" there is a script error. When Raven and Chelsea is on the phone. Raven says "For your FYI, I have Cory's spit in my ear". That means she is saying"For your for your information."

Spoofs

That's So Raven has become a target for shows such as MADtv:
  • The parody of Snoop Dogg & Pharell's music video "Drop It Like It's Hot," entitled "Smokin' Too Much Pot," shows the "That's So Raven" logo on the screen and the lyrics include "and you're laughing at So Raven, from smokin' lots of pot, smokin' lots of pot, smokin' lots of pot."
  • In another spoof, a white family has dinner at a restaurant. Then the grandfather says to the daughter, "Hey, want to go back to my place and watch a little That's So Raven on TV?"
  • In another spoof, a limo driver refuses to give his limo to two men visiting Hollywood, because he says "It's for a guest appearing on That's So Raven."

  • It was mentioned that T'Keyah Crystal Keymáh's character, Tanya, has a scholarship to study international law in England in the episode Pin Pals. It is rumored that the reason behind this is because Keymáh wanted to leave the show because she thought the show and her character were going nowhere. In a dispute with the producers she decided to quit because of her low salary and character's reputation.
  • The last episode to feature T'Keyah Crystal Keymah as Raven's mother was season 3's "Hizzouse Party", but after that episode,T'Keyah Crystal Keymah was still credited for the rest of season 3.
  • It has still not been mentioned in the show how Raven got her psychic powers. In later episodes, how she got them becomes a running gag.
  • The episode The Parties seems similar to an episode in The Proud Family, when Penny and LaCienega had a party on the same night.
  • Throughout each season Raven has a different hair style.
  • Raven-Symoné's dad, Christopher B. Pearman, has directed three episodes of That's So Raven entitled Skunk'd, The Royal Treatment and True Colors. He also directed the music video for the That's So Raven theme song. Raven-Symoné has produced most season four episodes.

  • The junior high/high school that Raven, Eddie, and Chelsea go to is Bayside High which was also the name of the school that Zack Morris and his friends went to in Saved By The Bell. That's why they used the same setting as Saved By The Bell for the scenes at school. Coincidentally, That's So Raven co-creator Michael Poryes was the executive story editor for Saved by the Bell. Ernie Sabella, who played Mr. Carosi on Saved by the Bell, has also guest starred on That's So Raven as Mr. Petracelli.
  • In the episode Numb and Number, when Eddie and Victor are going over Chelsea's commercial, Eddie's character in the commercial tells Chelsea's character that he is her half brother Blaize, which happens to be the name of Raven-Symone's brother.
  • The show was spoofed in a promotional TV commercial for the 76th Academy Awards during Home Edition and Alias in 2004. The commercial features Raven dressing up in luxurious and elegant clothing similar to the way actresses do when attending the ceremony and ends with Raven entering her living room watching the ceremony while eating popcorn.
  • Alana is Raven's enemy in the show, but in the Cheetah Girls she is her friend.
  • Ally Parker (Alyson Stoner) and Madison (Rhyon Nicole Brown) both use the same backpack prop in Goin' Hollywood and The Four Aces.
  • In 2005, the show was nominated for an Emmy Award for "Outstanding Children's Series". However, Nick News ended up winning the award.
  • When Raven, Eddie and Chelsea go to Junior High they go to the same school as they do in high school. But as shown in Juicier Consequences, Cory goes to a different Junior High.
