Temple City is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 33,377 at the 2000 census.
While Temple City remains a predominantly white community, it is part of a cluster of cities (along with Arcadia, Rosemead, Monterey Park, San Marino, and San Gabriel) in the west San Gabriel Valley with a large Asian population. In particular, a growing Mandarin-speaking expatriate population from Taiwan call Temple City home. Many Taiwanese immigrants own and operate several bridal gown shops and other wedding-related businesses (for example, photography) along the stretch of the downtown area on Las Tunas Drive.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.4 km² (4.0 mi²), all land.
There were 11,338 households out of which 36.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.8% were married couples living together, 14.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.6% were non-families. 19.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.90 and the average family size was 3.33.
In the city the population was spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 90.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $48,722, and the median income for a family was $54,455. Males had a median income of $39,365 versus $32,103 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,267. About 7.2% of families and 9.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
The elementary schools consist of Cloverly, Emperor, La Rosa, and Longden. Every public school in Temple City has a mascot that represents it. Cloverly's mascot is a cub, Emperor's is an eagle, and Longden's is a tiger. The elementary schools in Temple City go from kindergarden to sixth grade.
The middle school, Oak Intermediate Middle School, in Temple City goes from seventh grade to eighth grade. Oak Avenue's mascot is a royal lion with a crown on top of his head. Most people at Oak Avenue call the mascot a "royal" (which gives you "The Oak Avenue Royals"). The school colors are royal blue and gold.
The high school, Temple City High School goes from ninth grade to twelfth grade. The school colors are green and gold. The mascot for Temple City High School is a ram.
