Tanqueray is a brand of British gin which is marketed worldwide. The brand is currently owned by beverage giant Diageo.

Tanqueray gin was initially distilled in 1830, by Charles Tanqueray who was descended from three generations of clergy from the village of Tingreth in Bedfordshire. At 20 he chose not to follow the family calling and established a distillery in the Bloomsbury district of London instead. When Charles died, in 1868, the company passed into the hands of his heir, Charles Waugh Tanqueray. During WWII the distillery was almost completely destroyed. After the great air raid of 1941 only one of the stills, known as "Old Tom," survived and it is still in use today.

Products

Tanqueray No. Ten is the only gin that is produced from fresh whole-fruit and quadruple distilled. It is produced in small batches to retain its character. No. Ten is distilled at 94.6 proof (47.3% alcohol). London Dry Gin gets its name from the style and process of the distillation, not from where is it produced. London Dry also goes through a quadruple distillation process. This newly launched ultra-high end gin is sold in its distinctive green octagonal bottle with its plastic red "T" emblem.
The company also produces Tanqueray Sterling Vodka, in both neutral and citrus flavors.

The Tanqueray No. Ten bottle may be difficult to open. It is a twist cap, and may be opened using a tool that will give you a little extra grip. A nutcracker suitable for opening walnuts seems to suit the task perfectly.
