Tangermünde is a small town at the Elbe in the Altmark, the northeastern region of the federal state Saxony-Anhalt.

Tangermünde can look back at an almost 1000-year history. Brick buildings, a city wall with well-fortified gates which is closed almost and partly enormous, the castle complex and the variety of the half-timbered houses award a unique charm to the town. But not only the stone witnesses to the past agree on the charm of the town. Tangermünde is also the setting of Theodor Fontane's historic novel Grete Minde.

Tangermünde is the seat of the Verwaltungsgemeinschaft ("collective municipality") Tangermünde, which consists of the following municipalities (population in 2005 between brackets):

  • Bölsdorf (325)
  • Buch (398)
  • Grobleben (106)
  • Hämerten (219)
  • Langensalzwedel (183)
  • Miltern (407)
  • Schelldorf (218)
  • Storkau (Elbe) (176)
  • Tangermünde * (9.714)
