Thorleif Schjelderupp-Ebbe was a Norwegian zoologist who discovered the pecking order of hens in the twentieth century.
The dominance hierarchy of chickens and other birds that he studied led him to the conclusion that birds have a very specific, systematic way of deciding who gets the first chance to eat, and who has to wait.
