Switzer is a census-designated place (CDP) in Logan County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 1,138 at the 2000 census.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 24.9 km² (9.6 mi²), all land.
There were 466 households out of which 31.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.9% were married couples living together, 17.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.9% were non-families. 27.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.96.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 82.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.7 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $21,806, and the median income for a family was $30,341. Males had a median income of $33,125 versus $22,054 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $13,410. About 17.4% of families and 23.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 30.3% of those under age 18 and 18.6% of those age 65 or over.
Switzer is an archaic word for the Swiss, coming from the medieval German word Swizer (z in German is usually pronounced as tz). It is also an informal name for the Papal Swiss Guards at the Vatican.
