Swept Away is a 2002 romantic comedy film directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Madonna (Guy Ritchie's wife), Adriano Giannini, and Bruce Greenwood. The film is a remake of the 1974 Italian film Swept Away by an Unusual Destiny in the Blue Sea of August (Travolti da un insolito destino nell'azzurro mare d'agosto).

The movie was a commercial failure, and did so badly in the United States that it was not released in theatres in the United Kingdom but went straight to video. The film "won" five awards at the 2002 Golden Raspberry Awards:

  • "Worst Picture"
  • "Worst Actress" for Madonna
  • "Worst Screen Couple" for Madonna and Adriano Giannini
  • "Worst Remake or Sequel"
  • "Worst Director" for Guy Ritchie
In addition, Adriano Giannini was nominated for, but did not win, "Worst Actor". It was the first film to win both "Worst Picture" and "Worst Remake or Sequel".

Plot

Amber Leighton (Madonna) is a rich, spoiled, and arrogant woman, invited on a private cruise from Greece to Italy by her husband Tony (Bruce Greenwood). A storm leaves Amber on a desert island, together with the ship's first mate Giuseppe (Adriano Giannini), a communist sailor who she eventually falls in love with.

Trivia

  • Adriano Giannini reprised the role his father Giancarlo Giannini played in the original film.
  • "Amber Leighton" is the maiden name of the mother of the director, Guy Ritchie.
