Superligaen

Superliga redirects here. For other uses see Superliga (disambiguation) The SuperLiga (pron. IPA: *), or Liga bwin.com (for sponsorship reasons), is the major Portuguese professional football competition, and was previously known as Primeira Divisão, Primeira Liga and SuperLiga Galp Energia (previous sponsor).

Before the Portuguese football reform of 1938, an experimental round-basis competition was already being held - the Premier League. Despite that the Campeonato de Portugal (knock-out-basis) was the most popular and defined the champion.

Then, with the reform, the round-basis competition was implemented as the most important of the year and it would define the Portuguese Champion. From 1938 to 2000 the name Campeonato Nacional da Primeira Divisão (National Championship of the First Division), or just Primeira Divisão (First Division) was used. When the LPFP took control of the two nationwide leagues in 1999 it was named Campeonato Nacional da Primeira Liga (Premier League National Championship, or simply Primeira Liga, Premier League), and after Galp acquired the naming rights in 2002, SuperLiga Galp Energia. The four year deal with the Austrian sports betting web portal betandwin.com was announced in 18 August 2005, and is questioned by the other gambling authorities in Portugal (the Santa Casa da Misericórdia and the Portuguese Casinos Association), which hold the exclusive of legal gambling games in national territory. Now the competition holds the name "Liga bwin.com". (see the official statement)

SuperLiga clubs

Competition

For the 2006-07 season there are 16 clubs in the Portuguese Liga, having been reduced from 18 clubs in the previous season. During the course of a season each club plays the others twice, once at their home stadium and once at that of their opponents, for a total of 30 games. At the end of each season, the three lowest placed teams are relegated into the League of Honour, and the top three teams from the League of Honour are promoted in their place.

Currently, the top three teams in the SuperLiga qualify for the Champions League. The top two teams directly enter the group phase. The third placed team enters the competition at the third qualifying round, and must survive a two-legged knockout tie in order to enter the group phase. The teams classified in fourth and fifth enter the UEFA Cup together with the winner of the Portuguese Cup. If the winner of the Cup is already qualified for the Champions League, or would be qualified for the UEFA Cup by its league position, the runner-up will occupy the spot in the UEFA Cup. If the runner-up is also qualified for European competition through league position, the spot is occupied by the 6th placed team in the Liga.

Refereeing controversy

Usually as a scapegoat to justify poor results and other times simply because of poor referreeing decisions, controversy surrounding the refereeing bodies is a constant in Portuguese championships. In the last few years, Boavista was accused of having favourable refereeing when they were champions for the first time because the president of the club was also the son of the president of the organizing entity. Benfica's president said publicly that it was more important to control the organizing body than to hire a new player. FC Porto's success are always riddled with controversial refereeing, with wide support from the sport press A Bola and Record that caters to Benfica and Sporting's larger following. In 2004, Pinto da Costa (FC Porto president) was involved in a police investigation over bribes but was later released with lack of proof to support any of the alegations. Despite all these claims no team can claim to be the sole victim of poor refereeing, usually benefitting as much as it is harmed.

Inocêncio Calabote

Oficially, only two referees have ever been found guilty of tampering with results and banned from activity. The most famous event happened in the final day of the 1958/59 Championship. In the final round, FC Porto and Benfica were tied in points and FC Porto had a slight goal advantage (78-22 vs. 71-19). Benfica needed to win by more four goals than the result FC Porto would obtain to be the champion. With both match being playing simultaneously, FC Porto won their match against Torreense by 3-0. Benfica would now need 7 goals and none conceeded to be the champion but only managed a 7-1. The controversy surrounding the referreeing of the Benfica match started with the delayed start of the match so Benfica could know the result at the other field and ended with 10 min additional time conceeded for Benfica to score their missing goal in which they saw the other team have three players expelled and three penalty kicks in their favor. Reports of the time claim that since FC Porto's third goal was scored in the last minute, the Benfica team did not know they needed an additional goal. The referee, Inocêncio Calabote, was banned for life.
