Stratum granulosum contains 3 to 5 rows of flattened cells whose cytoplasm contains small granules. The granules are proteins that are in the process of transforming into the waterproofing protein keratin. Granules is derived from the term granulosum. It is in this layer that you find glycolipids and a thickening of the membrane.
