Stockton-on-Tees is a local government district and borough in north-east England, with a resident population in 2001 of 178,408 rising to 185,880 in 2005 estimates.

The borough of Stockton-on-Tees is made up of several smaller towns. Stockton-on-Tees with a resident population of 82,880, Billingham, 36,720, and Thornaby-on-Tees, 23,200 being the main settlements along with the smaller towns of Yarm, and Norton. Durham Tees Valley Airport is also partly within the borough. The Stockton-on-Tees borough accounts for the largest amount of residents within the Teesside and Hartlepool urban area.

The core of the town was traditionally in County Durham, but the borough spilled over the river into Yorkshire. The borough was formed on April 1 1974, from the Stockton part of Teesside county borough, along with part of Stockton Rural District in County Durham and part of Stokesley Rural District from the North Riding. It was a non-metropolitan district of Cleveland. It is part of the Tees Valley area.

It became a unitary authority on April 1, 1996. For ceremonial purposes the borough is split between County Durham and the North Yorkshire, along the line of the River Tees.
