Stephen McFadden (born 20 March 1959 in Maida Vale, London) is a well-known British actor.
He is most famous for playing 'hard man' Phil Mitchell in the BBC soap opera EastEnders, a role he has portrayed since 1990. His character has been involved in some of the soap's highest rated storylines, including his affair with his brother's wife Sharon played by Letitia Dean, and the most notable 'Who Shot Phil?' plot.
In 2003 he left the soap for a year's break, spent doing pantomimes. He made a brief return in April 2005, and later on October 24, 2005 he returned to EastEnders again on a more permanent basis. He famously dated Lucy Benjamin, who played his on-screen girlfriend Lisa Fowler in EastEnders and was the culprit in the Who Shot Phil? whodunnit.
Before joining EastEnders he had small roles in The Bill, Minder, Bergerac and the film Buster. He has also appeared in an episode of the anthology series Murder in Mind and the film Kevin & Perry Go Large in 2000.
McFadden was the recipient of much bad publicity during 2005, when it came to light that he was involved in dogging. On November 3, 2005, he was the victim of an assault, believed to have been perpetrated by his ex-partner, who earlier in the year had also made claims about McFadden's private life in the tabloid press. The woman was released with a police caution. With striking coincidence, this incident took place on the same day that Ross Kemp, the other Mitchell brother in the series, was also assaulted by his wife.
Steve McFadden has three children, Matthew, Teona and Mollie. He lives in Falmouth, Cornwall.
