(born June 13, 1951, Göteborg, Sweden) is a Swedish actor. During his early career most of his work was confined to his native Sweden. He is particularly associated with director Lars von Trier, having starred in three of the Danish auteur's features including The Kingdom.

His best-known English language film roles include a submarine captain in The Hunt for Red October; an engineer in The Unbearable Lightness of Being; an MIT professor of mathematics in Good Will Hunting, a young Fr. Lancaster Merrin in The Beginning, a Saxon warlord in King Arthur, and "Bootstrap Bill" Turner in Dead Man's Chest. He is the father of Alexander Skarsgård and Gustaf Skarsgård.

Trivia

• Was considered for the role of Oskar Schindler in Schindler's List. Interestingly, Skarsgård reports that people often mistake him for Liam Neeson, who portrayed Schindler in the film. Skarsgård had actually replaced Neeson in The Beginning (2004).
• Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly named their son Stellan (born August 5, 2003) after the actor.
