Stark is a 1989 novel written by Ben Elton.

Plot introduction

The book deals with the adventures of Colin Dobson, "CD", an environmentalist living in a near-future world in which the environmental damage Mankind is causing to the Earth is apparently reaching critical levels. CD and friend Rachel become embroiled in the titular Stark conspiracy; a cabal of Earth's richest and most influential men has long been aware that the planet's entire ecosystem is approaching total collapse. Seeking to save their own lives, they secretly created a fleet of spacecraft with the intention of founding a colony on the Moon.

Plot summary

As events develop, it becomes clear that not only do the Stark leaders intend to survive the catastrophe, they intend to deliberately provoke it early in order to prevent any other Humans from following them to the Moon.

Literary significance & criticism

The novel is largely a satire of business, government and social attitudes toward the environment in the late 1980s. It describes a world in which big business is completely uncaring and environmental protestors are largely foolish and unrealistic to the point of absurdity.
