Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast (often abbreviated JK2 or JO by fans) is a Star Wars computer game released in 2002. It was developed by Raven Software and published, distributed and marketed by LucasArts in North America and by Activision in the rest of the world. It was released for Microsoft Windows, Apple Macintosh, Nintendo GameCube and Xbox. It is powered by the Quake III engine. This game was followed by the very similar game Jedi Academy. The game was generally well received and is praised for its advanced lightsaber dueling.

Story

The game takes place around two years after the end of Mysteries of the Sith. Like its predecessors, it is based around the character Kyle Katarn as Mysteries of the Sith has too. Since nearly being taken in by the dark side, Kyle has given up his Lightsaber and the Force so he will not be thought as a Jedi Knight of the New Republic. He once again works with his partner (and now love interest) Jan Ors doing missions for the New Republic. On one particular mission on the planet Artus Prime, Jan is kidnapped and apparently killed by two powerful Dark Jedi, Tavion and Desann. Kyle embarks to the Valley of the Jedi to regain his Force Powers and then to Yavin IV to retrieve his lightsaber from Jedi Master Luke Skywalker. Upon further investigation, however, Kyle discovers that he was set up and that Desann had followed him to the Valley of the Jedi, using its power to infuse the force into soldiers, making an army of Dark Jedi known as the Reborn. He plans to use this army to invade the Jedi Academy on Yavin 4 and restore the Galactic Empire, with the aid of former Imperial admiral Galak Fyyar. Galak Fyyar then makes his own army, helping the Reborn to destroy the Jedi Academy. These troopers are called Shadow Troopers. Through his efforts, though, Kyle is able to stop most of the invasion and kill Desann and Fyyar. He is also reunited with Jan (Tavion had told Kyle in the middle of the game that Jan was alive, but this revelation came when Kyle—after besting Tavion in a duel, and in anger over the apparent murder of Jan—was force-choking Tavion and suspending her over a drop of lethal height). The game ends with Kyle stating that he will now keep his lightsaber. At the second last mission for this game, Kyle, with a help of several Jedi trainees from the academy, are able to stop these troopers. Once Desann was destroyed, this threat of Shadow Troopers and Reborn ended.

Buildup

After New Republic Intelligence agent Jan Ors was presumed killed during a mission on Artus Prime; Kyle Katarn, seeking vengeance, went to the Valley of the Jedi in order to resume his connection to the Force. Little did he know that his ship was being followed by Desann and Tavion.

After being led to the Valley, Desann and Tavion used the latent energy to empower several soldiers with the Force, turning them into Reborn Jedi and Shadow Troopers.

These Reborn, combined with the forces of Imperial warlord Admiral Fyyar, made a suitable force for the invasion of Yavin 4.

Attack

With such a force primed for the attack, Fyyar launched the Doomgiver from his base on Cairn. Unfortunately, Kyle Katarn had infiltrated the Cairn base and was soon on the Doomgiver itself. The ship launched, with Kyle Katarn in it, and headed for the Yavin system. On board, Katarn eventually managed to alert Rogue Squadron of the Doomgiver's location, and soon made his way to the detention levels of the ship. After rescuing a still living Jan Ors and learning of the attack on Yavin 4, Katarn set out to disable the shields.

In the shield generator room, Katarn met and battled Galak Fyyar, who was operating a mechanical suit made from Cortosis. After killing Fyyar and disabling the Doomgiver's shields, Katarn and Ors were able to reach an escape pod and evacuate the doomed ship. With the shields down, Rogue Squadron was easily able to destroy the Doomgiver.

Despite the destruction of the Doomgiver, several of the ship's landing pods were able to launch before the attack even began, and the ground portion of the battle began in the swamps of Yavin. Joining the ground troops was Kyle Katarn, who made his way through the swamps and to the main Temple of the Praxeum. The ground force of AT-STs, stormtroopers and specially trained swamptroopers along with a few Shadow Troopers encountered heavy resistance in the form of New Republic infantry.

Upon reaching the Praxeum, Katarn found the Jedi trainers and trainees to be holding their own against the invading Stormtroopers and Dark Jedi. It was, however, clearly apparent that Desann himself was commanding the landing force and was in the Praxeum. Katarn followed traces of the Chistori Dark Jedi throughout the Praxeum, until eventually finding him in the tunnels beneath the ancient temple. The two confronted each other and engaged in a lightsaber duel that was eventually won by Kyle Katarn.

During the duel, Republic infantry and the Jedi managed to route the remaining Stormtroopers and Reborn, causing a few of them to surrender.

Aftermath

Fyyar and Desann's attack on the fledgling Jedi Praxeum was one of the first real military tests that the new Jedi Order had to face. Despite the victory, Desann's apprentice Tavion still survived as well did several Reborn. They would later attempt to resurrect the Dark Side spirit of Sith Lord Marka Ragnos two years later.

The events of the Attack on the Jedi Praxeum also led Kyle Katarn to return to Jedi Order, after leaving the Order due to the actions in the Jedi Academy Trilogy.
