The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) is a regional accreditor for over 13,000 public and private educational institutions ranging from preschool to college level in the Southern United States. SACS is one of six regional accrediting organizations recognized by the United States Department of Education. They accredit schools in Virginia, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee and Texas.
At the university level, SACS has accredited large public institutions such as the University of Virginia, the University of Kentucky, Virginia Tech, Old Dominion or the University of Southern Mississippi; private colleges including Davidson College, Duke University, Elon University, High Point University, Wake Forest University and Vanderbilt University; and military schools such as The Citadel. The SACS has also accredited many smaller community colleges like Alamance Community College.
