Something The Lord Made is a 2004 HBO movie about the working relationship and begrudging mutual respect between Dr. Alfred Blalock and Vivien Thomas. Thomas was Dr. Blalock's African-American lab worker who eventually became his assistant surgeon despite having never attended medical school. Together, they developed the procedures used to treat the Tetralogy of Fallot, also known as Blue Baby Syndrome at Johns Hopkins University.
Dr. Blalock was played by Alan Rickman and Dr. Thomas was played by Mos Def.
Mos Def was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie at the 56th Annual Emmy Awards and also nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television at the 62nd Annual Golden Globe Awards.
The title refers to a statement made by Dr. Blalock about Thomas' innate surgical talent being "something the Lord made."
