Simbach am Inn is a town in the Rottal-Inn district of Bavaria, Germany, on the Austrian border (coterminous with the River Inn), opposite the Austrian city of Braunau.

History

Simbach is first mentioned as Sunninpah in 927.

In 1743 Simbach was nearly completely destroyed after the Bavarian-Austrian War.

The next city after Simbach on the other side of the Inn is Braunau, which became Austrian in 1779.

In 1833 Simbach became an independent municipality.

Simbach raised to a city in 1951 and is the youngest city in the Rottal-Inn district.

Simbach has grown in particular as a result of its railroad connection Munich - Vienna.

Simbach was one of the first places where electricity was used. For example, Simbach had electrical power three years before Munich.

In 1972 the muicipalities Kirchberg, Eggstetten and Erlach were added to Simbach.

Objects of interest, celebrations, meetings

The parish church Maria Himmelfahrt

This church is in the Erlach district and ranks among the most important church buildings in the region. The magnificent high altar is particularly worth seeing.

The city hall

This building is in the art nouveau style and was restored in 1987. It is a listed building.

Schellenberg

The "Schellenberg", at over 549 meters in height, is the highest hill between Inn and Rott. This hill gives delightful views of the Inn valley and neighbouring Upper Austria.

Pfingstdult

This is an annual popular festival. Every two years, it is accompanied by an industrial exhibition.

It takes place each year on the last Sunday in June.

This celebration takes place each year on the first weekend in September.

Twin-Towns

Simbach has two twin-towns. The first one is Skipton in England and the second one is Tolmezzo in Italy. Every year some school classes of Simbach visit this towns and pupils of both towns also visit Simbach.

Geothermal Power

Geothermal power is electricity generated by utilizing naturally occurring geological heat sources. It is a form of renewable energy.

With the first international district heating arrangement of Europe the Geothermie Braunau-Simbach walks on new ways in the warm care. Both frontier towns Braunau (Upper Austria) and brook Simbach (Bavaria) can be heated by this project with ecologically friendly earth warmth from 2,000-meter deep. With the Geothermie Braunau-Simbach the projectit concerns the biggest by far in Central Europe.

Figures, data, facts

About 10,000 people live in the town. Nearly 15% of them are younger than 18 years, 45% are between 18 and 50 years old, and 40% are older than 50 years.

The area of the town is nearly 4,750 ha, and it is near the river "Inn". The nearest neighbouring town is Braunau in Austria. Simbach and Braunau cooperate internationally in many different areas. For example, they use the heat of the earth from 2,000 meters deep to allow ecological heating of apartments and public buildings by means of heating pipelines around the district. By means of this type of heat production, both towns realize an annual energy achievement of more than 40 MW in an environmentally careful way.

The first mayor of Simbach is named Richard Findl (CSU). 25 people are in the town council and a total of 4 parties are represented. With 15 seats, the CSU is the biggest party in the town council. SPD; alliance 90 / the Greens and the free voters divide the remaining 10 seats.

In 2004 about 8,600 people spent their vacations in Simbach am Inn. They stayed on average two days, and most spent the night at hotels or holiday apartments. However, it is also possible to spend the night in a youth hostel or at a campsite.

Simbach has two twin towns; the first one is Skipton in England, and the second one is Tolmezzo in Italy. To keep the connection with the twin towns active, a pupil's exchange takes place several times a year between the towns.

Simbach is easily and comfortably reached by car and train as well as by airplane. The town entirely lies near the highway A94 and is also an important junction of the train connections between Munich, Vienna, Salzburg and Passau. The Franz-Josef-Strauss-Airport in Munich is easily reached in a drive of slightly over one hour.

The town offers a huge number of shops and leisure possibilities to the inhabitants and vacationers. In addition, many doctors, churches, associations and schools are found in Simbach.

Simbach also has its own police station and fire brigade.
