Silvestre Velez de Escalante was a Franciscan missionary and explorer of the Southwest United States in 1776. He is known for his journal, in which he described the expeditions and work he went on. These included an overland expedition from New Mexico trying to reach Monterey, California, during which he passed by the Grand Canyon and was the first white man to go through Utah.
