Silent thyroiditis is a mild degree of goiter without tenderness, normal or slightly elevated ESR, normal WBC count, and a self limited hyperthyroid stage of a few weeks to a few months, with subsequent hypothyroidism and full recovery eventually.
Etiology thought to be autoimmune. May see ATAs Appears to be a silent form of Hashimoto's thyroiditis except for a very low level of RAI uptake Ingestion of large amounts of iodine can have this same picture.
