Sheriff Woody is a fictional character appearing in several films and cartoons by Disney and Pixar. His voice is provided by Tom Hanks.

According to the plot of the movies, he first appeared in the 1950's as a marionette and the star of the "Woody's Roundup" television show (loosely based upon Howdy Doody). Among the variety of Wild West themed merchandise inspired by the show was a loose-limbed doll with a pull-string on his back that played a recording of several of Woody's distinctive lines such as "You're my favorite deputy!", "There's a snake in my boot!", "Reach for the sky!" and "Somebody's poisoned the water hole!" Woody's popularity plummeted after the launch of the Soviet satellite Sputnik made children much more interested in space toys, causing the merchandise to become very rare and desirable to toy collectors.

The Woody doll, owned by a boy named Andy, usually stays limp as an inanimate toy whenever people are watching, but talks and moves when around other toys or the family dog -- and on occasion, dared to talk to people in various emergency situations. Woody's girlfriend is Bo Peep, and his formal rival Buzz Lightyear becomes his best friend. Cowgirl Jessie, his horse Bullseye, and prospector Stinky Pete are members of his "Roundup Gang" from the marionette show, and also have their counterparts as dolls.
