Shanghai Jiao Tong University, (; abbreviated Jiao Da (交大) or SJTU), is one of the oldest and most influential universities in the People's Republic of China. The university is jointly run by the Ministry of Education and Shanghai Government.
In 1904, the Ministry of Commerce took over the school, and changed its name to Imperial Polytechnic College of the Commerce Ministry the next year. In 1906, the college was taken over again by the Ministry of Posts and Telegraphs, and changed its name to Shanghai Industrial College of the Ministry of Posts and Telegraphs. When the Republic of China was founded, the college was run by the Ministry of Communications, and changed its name once again to Government Institute of Technology of the Communications Ministry. In 1918, the School of Management was founded in this institute, and it became one of the oldest academic institutes founded by the Chinese government.
In 1920, the institute was combined with some other colleges and change its name to Nan Yang College of Chiao Tung. In 1928, the name was changed to First Chiao Tung University of the Communications Ministry. In the 1930s, it was known as the "Eastern MIT". In 1938, the Ministry of Education took over the university and it was renamed National Chiao Tung University (the separate institution of National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan, is still known by name). In 1943, the graduate school was founded.
With the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949, the new Communist government adopted a policy of creating specialist universities in the Soviet style of the time. Under this policy, some faculties of the university were incorporated into other faculties. At the same time, engineering faculties from other universities were incorporated to create a specialist engineering university. The name was changed to Shanghai Jiaotong University.
Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Shanghai Second Medical University were merged on July 18, 2005.
The univiersity recently received attention due to the much-publicized Shanghai Jiao Tong University ranking project, which is an ongoing large-scale project to provide independent rankings of Universities around the world.
At present, the university comprises 20 academic schools, 2 directly affiliated departments and one Graduate School. Besides, it also has School of Continuing(adult) Education, School of Online Learning, School of International Education, and a Vocational School. There are 60 undergraduate programs, 179 masters-degree programs, 6 professional master-degree programs, 22 disciplines and 143 sub-disciplines authorized to confer Ph. D. degrees, 23 post-doctorate programs, 22 State key doctorate programs and 16 State key laboratories and 4 National engineering centers.
The university have more than 1,420 professors and associate professors, including 15 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences 20 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and 31 "Changjiang Chair Professors".
Of all the fellows of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Academy of Engineering, more than 200 are the alumni of Shanghai Jiaotong University.
