"Self Control" is also the name of an international hit song (Giancarlo Bigazzi/Raffaele Riefoli/Steve Piccolo) recorded in 1984 by Laura Branigan (also known for the hit "Gloria"), as well as the album on which it appears. Known for its half-whispered refrain ("You take my self/You take my self control") and for stopping the rhythm and instrumentation of the song as a chorus of male backing vocals (o-o-OH) rises to a sonic boom. The song was also recorded that same year (with the same English lyrics) by Italian singer Raf. Raf is also known as Raffaele Riefoli, one of the author of the song, and the first one to record it.

"Self-Control" is also the title of a novel by Mary Brunton, a little known Scottish novelist, included in Dale Spender's work "Mothers of the Novel: 100 Good Female Novelists before Jane Austen"
