Selby is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election.

The constituency covers the district of Selby and the southern suburbs of the city of York. It includes the University of York and the Drax and Eggborough power stations.

Boundary review

Following their review of parliamentary representation in York and North Yorkshire, the Boundary Commission for England has created a new seat of Selby and Ainsty. The new seat will lose the southern suburbs of York to the (also newly-created) seat of York Outer.

Political tendencies

Based on results from the 1992, 1997, 2001 and 2005 general elections, the Conservatives have seemed to stand in better stead than Labour in Selby. On average, for every 1% of the country that voted Tory, 1.26% vote Tory in Selby - for every 1% of the country that voted Labour, only 1.09% of Selby voted Labour. Using this style of analysis, there has been a shift from Tory voters to Labour over the past 13 years. At present if half of the country voted Tory and the same amount voted Labour, there would be a Tory majority of 3.6% - different from the 1992 position, where there would have been 4.0%, showing how there has been a shift from Conservatives to Labour.
