The Second Summer of Love is a name sometimes given to the time (1988-1989) in Britain. This was when of the rise in popularity of Acid House music and the euphoric explosion of unlicensed Ecstasy-fuelled rave parties . The term generally refers to both the summers of 1988/9 , "By the end of 1988, the second summer of love was over" "As the second "Summer of Love" arrived in 1989" when electronic dance music and the prevalence of the drug ecstacy fuelled an explosion in youth culture culminating in mass free parties and the era of the rave. The hedonism and freedom drew parallels from the first Summer of Love in San Francisco. The music of this era fused dance beats with a psychedelic, 60's flavour.

Accounts of the Second Summer of Love

Michael Winterbottom's film "24 Hour Party People" contains an interesting chronicle of some of the events that surround the "Second Summer of Love." It follows the careers of noted Manchester alternative groups New Order and the Happy Mondays during the peak of the movement.

Hanif Kureshi's novel "The Black Album" is set during this period.
