The Seal of Texas was adopted in 1845 by the Texas State Constitution from an original design of the Republic of Texas seal. It states, "There shall be a seal of the State, which shall be kept by the Governor and used by him officially. The said seal shall be a star of five points, encircled by an olive and live oak branches, and the words 'the State of Texas.'" Dr. Charles Stewart, a resident of Montgomery County, was the designer of both the Texas seal.
