This is a list of characters from the Nickelodeon animated television series, SpongeBob SquarePants.
Main characters
- SpongeBob SquarePants - An incredibly optimistic square-shaped sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea, he is the lead character of the show. He works at the Krusty Krab with his boring neighbor Squidward. He believes that no one has ulterior motives, and believes almost anything that anybody tells him. His interests are bubble blowing, jellyfishing, playing super heroes, and "doing things" with Patrick. He is very pliable and rubbery, and is capable of stretching, inflating, multiplying, or even breaking apart.
- Squidward Tentacles - A bad-tempered and hostile octopus (Stephen Hillenburg insists Squidward is an octopus and not a squid-this makes sense, as a squid would have ten limbs, rather than eight as Squidward does) that lives in an Easter Island moai between the domiciles of SpongeBob and Patrick. Although loved by the other characters, Squidward is rather pessimistic and antisocial, exhibiting many curmudgeonly tendencies. He is an artist who paints and plays the clarinet (badly).
- Patrick Star - A cheerful, naïve and unintelligent starfish who is SpongeBob's best friend. He lives under a rock to the left of Squidward's house. Everybody but SpongeBob and himself realize that Patrick is incredibly stupid.
- Eugene H. Krabs - The money-addicted, miserly owner of the Krusty Krab. Commonly known as Mr. Krabs, he is SpongeBob and Squidward's boss. He lives in an anchor with his daughter Pearl, who is (somehow) a whale while he is a crab. Mr. Krabs once said that Pearl "takes after her mother that way", in a guide to the show.
- Sandy Cheeks - A karate loving daredevil martial artist and scientist squirrel who moved into an air-filled dome under the sea in Bikini Bottom. Her dome is located somewhere directly down the road from SpongeBob, Patrick and Squidward's houses. She used to live in Texas.
- Gary - SpongeBob's pet snail, who acts very much like a cat, for example, meowing, sleeping, and avoiding baths. Very intelligent, as revealed in the episode "Your Shoe's Untied". Gary actually wears shoes, and taught SpongeBob how to tie his shoes. Gary also has a record player in his shell.
- Sheldon J. Plankton - The owner of the restaurant Chum Bucket and Mr. Krabs' main rival. Usually referred to by his surname, Plankton, he has one yellow eye with a red iris. Plankton is supposed to be modeled after a kind of plankton called a copepod. He is determined to steal the secret Krabby Patty formula from The Krusty Krab and run Mr. Krabs out of business. His restaurant, which never made business except for the movie, is across the street of the Krusty Krab. He is married to his computer, Karen.
- French Narrator - The one who introduces the viewers to most episodes and the one who reads the time cards--a parody of oceanographers such as the French Jacques Cousteau. He also does the voice of the "realistic talking fish head" reporter.
Major characters
- Larry Lobster - A very strong lobster. Regularly goes to Bikini Bottom's beach, Goo Lagoon and works as a lifeguard there. He is basically congenial, but SpongeBob seems to suspect him of deliberately stealing his time with Sandy. Next to her, Larry is the strongest critter in Bikini Bottom.
- Mrs. Poppy Puff - A Boating School Driving instructor who teaches students (including SpongeBob) at Mrs. Puff's Boating School. She often gets hurt by SpongeBob's bad driving, and ended up in jail a few times. She went on two dates with Mr. Krabs in "Krusty Love". Her erratic behavior comes from two fears: the first, being stuck teaching SpongeBob, an annoyingly painful, and yet perfect, student; the other is letting loose a monster like SpongeBob who could destroy Bikini Bottom with his awful driving skills. Being a pufferfish, she often inflates herself when something bad happens, such as when SpongeBob crashes during boating lessons. Mrs. Puff has a pet, Snellie, the same one Squidward entered in the Great Snail Race. Not much has been revealed about her personal history, except that she has had to move from another town and start a new boating school under a new name ("...I'll move to a new town, start a new boating school under a new name. No. Not again..." No Free Rides), doesn't like to talk about what happened to her late husband (Mr. Puff was turned into a lamp), and has had a history of mental instability ("You can get through this without losing your sanity. Whew, that's a road we don't want to go down again" Doing Time); suggesting that she may have killed her husband and fled. Mary Jo Catlett, better known for her role as Pearl the maid on "Diff'rent Strokes", provides Mrs. Puff's voice.
- Squilliam Fancyson - An octopus that attended Squidward's band class, and always puts Squidward down. He is a very wealthy, snooty, unibrow-endowed rival of Squidward who looks down at Squidward for being just a lowly cashier in a greasy spoon. When Squilliam takes his band to the "Bubble Bowl", he comments that he is living Squidward's dream. However, at the end of "Band Geeks", Squlliam, painfully aware of how good Squidward's band's performance is, has a heart attack and is rushed to hospital, therefore Squidward gets his own back. Squidward is painfully jealous and schemes constantly to show Squilliam he isn't a loser. He later returns in "Squilliam Returns" and thinks that Squidward was the owner of a five-star restaurant. He owns a private yacht, a private lake, a private heliport, a private island, and a balloon/casino + he owns beautiful clothes, velvet shirts with a leather collar, and gold-silver alloy buttons for his leather cloak. Squilliam's name is a combination of the name 'William' and the name 'squid' (Squidward has a similar combination of his name, which is "squid" and "Edward").
- The Flying Dutchman - A green ghost named after the famous ghost ship of the same name. He lives in a giant ship that floats in the "sky" (underwater). When he died they used his body as a window display. Now he haunts the seven seas because he was never put to rest. Whenever he appears, a thunderstorm suddenly occurs. He last wore shoes 5,000 years ago. He has won the Fancy Knotting contest for the past 3,000 years. The knots he knows are: Pretzel Knot, Double Diamond Knot, Square Knot, The Constrictor, Gut Knot, Pillow Knot, Butterfly Knot, Monkey Chain, Monkey's Fist, The Monkey and the Loop Knot a.k.a. Poop Loop. He cannot eat without his dining sock.
- Patchy the Pirate - President of the SpongeBob SquarePants Fan Club. Presents SpongeBob SquarePants specials. Has an eyepatch and hook for a hand that alternates between his left and right hands. Tom Kenny plays Patchy.
- Potty the Parrot - Patchy's pet parrot. He normally annoys Patchy and likes future stuff while Patchy likes prehistoric stuff. Voiced by Steven Hillenburg. Potty's favorite band is "The Birdbrains."

Family Members
=SpongeBob's Family
=
- Mr. and Mrs. SquarePants - SpongeBob's parents, made their debut in "Home Sweet Pineapple", where they came to pick up SpongeBob after nematodes ruined his pineapple house. They later appeared in "Culture Shock " as they watched the Krusty Krab talent show, and in "No Free Rides", where Mr. SquarePants kissed Mrs. Puff's hand and gave his son a boatmobile for passing his driver's test. Mr. SquarePants has a moustache, wears thick glasses, is bald, wears a white short sleeve shirt (which the sleeves are only seen) and brown pants pulled up high. Mrs. SquarePants has black hair and is dressed in a purple pillbox hat with matching sleeveless dress and has a pearl necklace, her appearance resembles Jacqueline Kennedy. Strangely, neither Mr. SquarePants or Mrs. SquarePants are square. Mr. SquarePants is voiced by Tom Kenny and Mrs. SquarePants is voiced by Sirena Irwin.
- Grandma SquarePants - SpongeBob's grandma and Mr. SquarePants' mother (voiced by Marion Ross). She made her debut in "Grandma's Kisses" and treats SpongeBob like a baby, which he resents because other characters make fun of him for it.
- Grandpa SquarePants - SpongeBob's grandpa and Mr. SquarePants' father (voiced by Tom Kenny). He made his first appearance in "The Sponge Who Could Fly". "Sayings" he has said: "If we were meant to fly, we'd have propellers on our heads or jet engines on our backs." and "Don't chase after a bus, especially one that's going up at a 90 degree angle."
- Todd SquarePants - SpongeBob's cousin who officially (and only) appeared in the Story Reader book, The Never-Ending Stay. He was to stay in SpongeBob's house forever but Todd left in the end after being offended by SpongeBob. He is voiced by Tom Kenny.
- Sherman "Sherm" SquarePants - Mr. SquarePants' brother and Grandma SquarePants' second son. Uncle Sherm was first mentioned in the episode "Krab Borg".
=Patrick's Family
=
- Ed Star - Patrick's cousin. He only appeared in the end of the Story Reader book, The Never-Ending Stay. He stayed in Bikini Bottom for 14 weeks.
- Mr. Star - Patrick's father. Voiced by Thomas F. Wilson.
- Mrs. Star - Patrick's mother. Voiced by Lori Alan. In addition to his real parents, Patrick once confused them with two starfish named Janet and Marty. They were equally confused, but it was cleared up when Marty reminded Janet that they don't have a son.
=Squidward's Family
=
- Mrs. Tentacles - Squidward's mother. She made a tiny appearance in "Fools in April". She says "You stink!", possibly indicating a bad childhood, in a flashback of when Squidward pulled a bad April Fool's prank on SpongeBob, which occurred a short time before he realized his mother was there. She made her first live appearance on the episode, "Krusty Towers", because Squidward wanted cookies like mother used to make. She made a small appearance in "Ghost Host" when the Flying Dutchman haunted him.
- Mr. Tentacles - Squidward's father. He was mentioned in "Krab Borg" When SpongeBob wanted to test if Mr. Krabs was a robot or not, he said that Squidward's father never hugged him. Squidward however said that his father loved him very much.
=Mr. Krabs' Family
=
- Mama Krabs - Mr. Krabs' mother and Pearl's grandmother. The episodes that have featured her have shown her to be very strict and no-nonsense. In "Sailor Mouth", she made Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob, and Patrick repaint her pink anchor home as punishment for foul language, and in "Mid-Life Crustacean", she grounded her son for the night after he stole her bloomers. In Enemy In-Law, she also fell in love with Plankton once. She was voiced by Paul Tibbitt in her first two appearances, but was voiced by Sirena Irwin in her third appearance. She laughs like Popeye.
- Pearl Krabs - The teenage whale daughter of Mr. Krabs. She is popular at school, can be mean in a typical high-schooler way, and has the ability to cry very hard. She is often embarrassed by her father's lack of cool or "coral" (the Bikini Bottom teenagers' temporary way of saying "cool" which went out when Mr. Krabs began to say coral to be "young" again), depending upon the in-word of the week. In early episodes she seems to do things teenagers don't do, like tea parties, but later on, she starts acting more and more like a teenager. The difference between her and her father in terms of species has never been addressed; possible theories include that Mr. Krabs was once married to a whale or that Pearl was adopted, though these are mere speculation. In the episode "Whale of a Birthday", it can be proven that Pearl was not adopted, since Mr. Krabs had a banner for her since the day she was born (The banner said "It's a Boy", with boy crossed out and "girl" put in its place). Her favorite band is an all-boys band called "Boys Who Cry."
=Plankton's Family
=
- Karen - Plankton's "computer wife". She is the brain to Sheldon J. Plankton, supplying him with plots. She is voiced by Tom Kenny's wife, Jill Talley.
- The Plankton Family - A large number of plankton hillbillies. They are relatives of Sheldon J. Plankton, and although they aren't the evil geniuses Plankton thought they were, they are still powerful in great numbers. They all seem to like root beer. Some of them are named:
- Clem - Plankton's cousin, he doesn't know how to read.

- Barnacle Boy - Semi-retired superhero, who is Mermaid Man's sidekick, and he also lives at Shady Shoals retirement home. In the episode "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy V", he changes his name to Barnacle Man. This was not a permanent change; in " The Motion Picture", he is Barnacle Boy again. According to Battle for Bikini Bottom, he has a son, a daughter-in-law, and four "screaming" grandchildren. Barnacle Boy is old (68 years old). His real name was revealed to be Kyle. He is voiced by Tim Conway.

Dirty Bubble first appears in Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy II, where he tries to capture the heroes, who attempt to ditch SpongeBob. He has successfully captured the two, before SpongeBob pops him with a pencil. Later, in Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy V, Dirty Bubble is brought back by Man Ray. In the episode, Man Ray has teamed up with him to form an organization called EVIL (Every Villain Is Lemons). When Barnacle Boy tires of Mermaid Man treating him like a little kid, he joins the two, and commits crimes. In the end, Barnacle Boy returns to the good side, and the two villains are arrested.
- Jumbo Shrimp - One of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy's rivals. From Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy II. Once referred to (perhaps mistakenly, or in reference to a different villain) as "The Killer Shrimp" by the Dirty Bubble.
- Kelp Thing - One of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy's enemies. Seen in Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy VI. "I've got to do what I do." He parks his villian car in no parking zones, but Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy tow his car away.
- Sneaky Hermit - A super hermit crab who is one of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy's enemies. He plans to rule the world by means of sneakiness. He steals buildings in a sneaky fashion. His weakness is pepper. Seen in Lights, Camera, PANTS!. In the New Adventures of Mermaidman and Barnacleboy episode in that game, he called Man Ray, Moron Ray and the Dirty Bubble, the Dopey Bubble.
- Snorelonn - An enemy of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. Only mentioned in Nickelodeon Magazine, in the special SpongeBob issue. Apparently his evil plan is to wake everyone up with loud snoring noises. SpongeBob and Patrick were playing Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy and said that Squidward was Snorelonn. Snorelonn also plans to eat them and suck out their brains with a turkey baster.
- Man Ray - Man Ray was first mentioned in Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy by Spongebob when he's trying to get Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy to come out of retirement. He later appears in person in Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy III, where SpongeBob and Patrick released him from tar-tar sause. When he discovers that he has a tickle belt, Man Ray tricks the duo to teach him kindness. After the class, Man Ray grabs two devices from Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy to take over Bikini Bottom. When he discovers that he has become good, he quits villainy. It is also revealed that Man Ray doesn't really have a head. His head is made up of his mask/shoulder pads combo and is headless underneath that. Later, in Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy V, he becomes evil again, and brings back the Dirty Bubble and they team up with Barnacle Boy (who became evil) to form an organization called EVIL (Every Villain Is Lemons). At the end, Barnacle Boy becomes good again, and, Man Ray is taken to jail with Dirty Bubble. John Rhys-Davies voices Man Ray.
- Prawn - Once of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy's enemies, Prawn turned Mermaid Man's socks pink. SpongeBob had once defeated him though.
- Reflecto - An enemy of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy. Squidward was mistaken for Reflecto when SpongeBob and Patrick were playing Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy.

However, Doctor Mannowar actually lived through it, and is the only person to ever accomplish this so far. Big Lenny is seen in "I'm Your Biggest Fanatic" as a picture and in the PC game "Operation Krabby Patty" during the jellyfishing game with Sandy and Patrick.

- Polka-dot Dolphin - A dolphin among other things which SpongeBob and Patrick search for when Squidward creates a treasure hunt for them, to distract them while he practices clarinet. He says that if they find every item he lists, then he would play alarm clock pass with them, even though he is sure they will never find a polka-dot dolphin. At the end they do find one and Squidward is forced to play. This appears in the sound board book SpongeBob SquarePants Find It!.
- Sea Bear - A large fish with clawed fins and the head of a normal bear. The majority of Bikini Bottom's inhabitants (most notable being Squidward) do not believe in the sea bear's existence; however, SpongeBob and Patrick are fervent believers, having read about them in the Bikini Bottom Enquirer (Article: I married a sea bear) and Fake Science Monthly (Article: sea bears and fairy tales are real). There is a wide range of things that can anger a sea bear, including: Playing the clarinet badly, Waving a flashlight around (flashlights are their natural prey), Eating cheese (cubed, sliced is fine), Stomping around (they take that as a challenge), Wearing a hoop skirt, clown shoes or a sombrero in a goofy fashion (such as upside down), Screeching like a chimpanzee, Running, Limping (they hate that more than running), and Crawling. The only thing that can prevent a sea bear attack is an anti-sea bear circle (but it has to be a circle, an oval will just cause a sea bear to attack you). The sea bear that appears in "The Camping Episode" takes an immediate dislike to Squidward, after he unwisely does everything that SpongeBob and Patrick warn against. It also attacks him simply because it doesn't like him.
- Sea Rhinoceros - A fish with horns, these creatures are bigger and meaner than Sea bears and are attracted by sea bear attacks. The only way to protect yourself from a sea rhinoceros is to wear anti-sea rhinoceros undergarments.
- Insects
- Other
- Bubble Buddy - A sentient soap bubble created by SpongeBob when he felt alone. Appeared in "Bubble Buddy". He also appears in the video game Battle for Bikini Bottom, teaching SpongeBob new bubble moves. Also, Bubble Buddy has been down Flounder Hill, on Sand Mountain. Bubble Buddy likes bendy straws, funny jokes, and diet shampoo. He doesn't like bun crust. He is lactose intolerant, and is naturally nervous around pointy objects. His birthday is October 9th.
- DoodleBob - A crude drawing of SpongeBob that came to life in "Frankendoodle". He was a psychotic 2-D drawing created by SpongeBob, as the means to play a prank on Squidward. The story goes that an artist in the Pacific Ocean dropped his pencil in the water. It landed in Conch Street, Bikini Bottom, and came into the hands of residents SpongeBob and Patrick, who discovered its weird and wonderful abilities to bring its user's works of art to life. SpongeBob then drew a crude self portrait, which he christened Doodlebob. Doodlebob proceeded to commit various atrocities (e.g. beating up Squidward, trapping SpongeBob and Patrick in a hole) before being partially destroyed by his creator via rubbing him out with the eraser. However, the arm survived. It tracked down SpongeBob and the "magic pencil", drew himself (adding a pair of eyebrows) and then tried to kill SpongeBob. After rubbing out SpongeBob's behind and destroying part of the pineapple, he was 'killed' after sticking back into a piece of paper. SpongeBob later described him as: "...a two-dimensional creature, lost in our three-dimensional aquatic world, longing for a purpose." He also appears in the non-canonical Nicktoons Unite! video game as one of SpongeBob's moves in the GameCube version.
- Rockie - Patrick's pet snail, whom he entered in "The Great Snail Race"; Rockie appeared to actually be a rock, but managed to overcome this setback to win the race.
- Roger - An unhatched chicken in "New Student Starfish". He eventually hatches at the end, saying in a voice reminding of Don Knotts-"Hey, what'd I miss?"
- Octozilla - A giant, mutated, prehistroic, reptillan octopus-like monster with ten long tentacles, a dark greenish-purple body and sharp dorsal fins like sharks, created by Plankton. He is really indestructible and able to shoot a fiery, electrical, radioactive lava-like substance, which melts buildings and objects. His weakness is Krabby Patties. Octozilla is a spoof of Godzilla.
