Scary Movie (2000), an American film directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans, is a comedy-gross-out film spoof that parodies the horror and mystery genres. Several mid- and late-1990s movies are skewered, including The Sixth Sense, I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Usual Suspects, The Matrix, The Blair Witch Project, and the Scream trilogy.
It was promoted with the tagline "No mercy. No shame. No sequel.", with the last reference being to the tendency of popular horror movies to become long-running franchises. However, in 2001, Scary Movie 2 was released (with the appropriate tagline "We lied"). A second sequel, Scary Movie 3, followed in 2003. Scary Movie 4 was released on April 14, 2006.
The movie follows the same general plot as the first Scream movie. The opening starts with a young woman (Carmen Electra) being called at home by a mysterious caller, who then proceeds to threaten her. The woman runs into a field where the mysterious caller rips off her shirt and skirt, revealing only her underwear. She then sees two traffic signs pointing in opposite directions - one to 'Safety', the other to 'Death'. The young woman runs in the direction of 'Death', is stabbed by the killer (though when the killer pulls out the knife from her chest, he rips out her silicone implant) and is run over by her father (who is too busy getting fellatio to notice - referenced to the movie Thinner). This is considered a blonde joke.
The movie then follows Cindy Campbell (Anna Faris), a student at a high school, who talks about the death of the young woman and implies that she and her friends have some dark secret they're hiding, and which is now catching up with them (with obvious references to I Know What You Did Last Summer). One by one, Cindy's friends are murdered. The local police are no help, especially since Doofy (Dave Sheridan), Buffy's retarded brother, is part of the police force.
Towards the end of the movie, the killer reveals himself - as being both Ray (Shawn Wayans) and Bobby (Jon Abrahams), who make light of the fact that Scream didn't have a plot, and I Know What You Did Last Summer didn't make any sense. Ray kills Bobby, but is killed himself by the actual killer, who has yet to be revealed. Sitting in the police station, trying to make sense of everything, Cindy comes to a revelation (parodying the scene in The Usual Suspects when Agent Kujan realizes who Keyser Soze is) - the actual killer is none other than Doofy ("Shithead?" the Sheriff asks in response). The two run out to find him. However, in a scene paralleling the ending of The Usual Suspects, Doofy sheds his outfit and mustache, revealing himself to be a 'cool' guy (with the song "Too Cool For School" By Fountains of Wayne in the background) who jumps into reporter Gail Hailstorm's car. The two drive off, with Doofy throwing the fright mask out as the final piece of evidence. Cindy stands in the middle of the street, yelling, "Noooo!" until a car comes by and runs her over (which becomes a signature sequence in the next 3 sequels).
In addition, James Van Der Beek, Rick Ducommun, David L. Lander, Keenen Ivory Wayans, and Kelly Coffield have cameo roles.
