SCAN is the newspaper of the Lancaster University Students' Union. It is run almost entirely by volunteers with a single paid sabbatical position, the editor, annually elected by cross-campus ballot. SCAN is an acronym standing for either Societies, Colleges, and Athletic Union News or Sport, Colleges and Administration News. SCAN is a monthly publication with an additional update edition published approximately two weeks after each main edition. The update edition was introduced at the start of the 2005-2006 academic year when the publication went monthly (it had previously been a fortnightly publication; in the 1970s it was weekly) to try and reduce the age of the news that was reported between editions as well as gauge reaction to the possibility of going monthly the subsequent year. Currently, the paper remains fortnightly.
Scan also runs a website, where they report breaking news events, offer weblogs by writers, provide live coverage of events on campus and allow students to post public letters to the editorial team.
