The Santa Barbara Independent is a free arts and entertainment newsweekly published in Santa Barbara, California. The paper, published every Thursday, has a circulation of 40,000 (as of March 2005), and was founded in the late 1980's. The paper includes weekly news briefs, arts and entertainment calandars, and reviews of local restaurants and culture. The Independent also features regular in-depth reporting, often covering local politics.

A December 2004 report by the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies detailed the demographics of the Independent's readership. The paper's audience is predominately female (68%) and nearly half of readers are over 45 years of age.
