Samaná is located in the northern part of the Dominican Republic. It is known for its mountains of which is almost entirely formed. Samaná has numerous beaches and it is now one of best known tourist destination in the Dominican Republic.

Samaná's history is a very rich one. It was to be sold to the United States as a military base during Santana's presidency but the deal was never realized because the United States felt it was expensive at that time. This little province was also proposed to be the capital of the country at one time.

Samana is one of the most beautiful places in the Dominican Republic, and one of the least known by Dominican natives in general and foreign visitors in particular. It was discovered on January 12, 1493 by Christopher Columbus who was bitterly greeted with a barrage of spears and arrows from native Taino warriors. It is said that this is the first instance of violent opposition to the Spanish conquistadors in the Americas. Samana is off the beaten path, and although it welcomes visitors from all over the world, the tourist industry has not yet exploited the full potential of this tropical paradise. Thus, this is a special place with many pristine surprises for nature lovers. Tropical forests, coconut groves, hundreds of cozy alcove beaches with turquoise crystal clear waters, waterfalls, protected national parks, a great bay, a peninsula, Samana is all of these things. But, perhaps the one thing that makes Samana most special is the fact that it is the area where humpback whales have selected as one of their breeding sanctuaries. Thousands of humpback whales come to the cost off of Samana for the breeding season, from January to March. The Peninsula of Samana also features Samana City, also known as Santa Barbara de Samana. People here are warm and always helpful to visitors. Samana is one more of those hidden jewels in the Dominican Republic experience.
