A presidential election was held in El Salvador on 25 March 1984. The Salvadoran people elected a new president, together with a vice-president, for a five-year term. José Napoleón Duarte of the Christian Democratic Party won the most votes, but failed to gain a constitutionally mandated absolute majority. Duarte won the run-off election held on 6 May.
