Saint Vincent is a volcanic island in the Caribbean, part of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. It is located in the Caribbean Sea, between Saint Lucia and the Grenadines. It was disputed territory between France and the United Kingdom in the 18th century, but was ceded to the UK in 1783. It gained independence as late as 1979. Kingstown (population 19,300) is the chief port of the island. It was also a filming location for the The Curse of the Black Pearl.

The highest mountain is the active volcano Soufrière, 1,234m (4,048 ft) high which erupted violently in 1812 and 1902. The latter eruption killed 1,680 people.
