Sagging is a style of wearing pants or shorts below the waist. It became popular in the 1990s and continues on today. This style of fashion has had several variations and exists in several subcultures—such as hip hop and punk rock.

Overview

The "sporting" of the style is when a male wears his pants/trousers low enough on his hips to show his underwear, usually done with boxer shorts. Belts are not worn to reinforce the sagging, but they can be to hold the sag at their desired level—preventing the trouser from falling off.

Sagging has had several variations and exists not only in hip hop, but in several other subcultures—such as skateboarders and dance subcultures. Sagging is also popular among some in the rock scene—primarily punk rockers and skate punks—and is sometimes sported by many bands.

Throughout the years the variations in which people sag their pants has changed. In recent years the trend of "freeballing" while sagging has become popular in some countries, and even the underwear used to sag has changed. In countries such as Australia, for instance, has become very popular to sag while wearing silk/satin boxer shorts. Also in many warmer places across the world, it has become very popular to sag while not wearing a shirt. Other variations of sagging include how low the pants sit beneath the waist. The wearing of pants below the buttocks is known as "ass sagging,"—this is not nearly as common as sagging just above the buttocks or even half way down the buttocks.

Controversy

In many school districts across the United States, sagging is prohibited. Additionally, anti-sagging laws exist in communities across the United States. For example, the U.S. state of Georgia legislature passed an anti-sagging law in September 2005 that would make it an aggravated misdemeanor to wear one’s pants below what is considered a ‘normal’ rate of sag—that is, no more than two inches from one’s waist line and in such a way that a reasonable and prudent person cannot see one’s boxer shorts. "Normal" sagging includes wearing shorts below the knees and wearing long pants in a way so the cuffs bunch up over the ankles.
