SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) is a Linux distribution supplied by Novell, targeted at the business market. It is supposed to be run mainly on servers, but some desktop software is included as well. New versions are released at an interval of 18-24 months. During that period the selected software is put under heavy testing with the intention that only mature, stable versions of the included components will make it through to the released product.
The current version is 9, released in August 2004. Service Pack 3 was released in December 2005. It is supported by the major hardware vendors - IBM, HP, Sun Microsystems, Dell, SGI and Fujitsu Siemens Computers and is currently the only Linux distribution that has achieved CAPP/EAL4+ (Controlled Access Protection Profile/Evaluation Assurance Level 4+) certification.
The SLES 9 codebase is the foundation of SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (formerly Novell Linux Desktop) - Novell's desktop distribution for business use.
SLES is also an important part of Novell Open Enterprise Server, which brings all the networking services that were previously available only on NetWare to the Linux platform.
