Rosa centifolia (lit. hundred leaved/petaled rose), the provence rose or cabbage rose is a species of rose developed by Dutch rose breeders in the middle ages between the 1600's and the 1800's. R. centifolia is believed to be bred from Rosa gallica and other rose species, however, its exact hereditery history is not well known.
Individual plants are usually shrubby in appearance with long drooping canes and greyish green leaves. The flowers are round and globular, with thin overlapping petals that are higly scented. R. centifolia is widely cultivated and their flowers are commercially harvested for the production of rose oil, which is commonly used in perfumery.
