Ripuarian is a West Germanic dialect group spoken in the Rhineland, eastern Belgium and southern Dutch Limburg from northwest of Düsseldorf and Cologne to Aachen in the west, and Waldbröl in the east. It belongs to Middle Franconian and Rhinelandic. Most famous is Kölsch, the dialect of Cologne. These dialects most often call themselves Platt like Öcher Platt (of Aachen) or Eischwiele Platt (of Eschweiler) or Bönsch Platt (of Bonn). Ripuarian forms a common dialect family together with the Moselle Franconian in Luxembourg and Rhineland-Palatinate.
The Ripuarian Franks were a subtribe of the Franks. They lived mainly in the Rhineland, with their capital at Cologne, until they were annexed into the Frankish Nation by Clovis I around the year 508.
Ripuarian is also another word for Riparian.
