Relapse Records is a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania based independent metal record label. It was started by Matt Jacobson in August, 1990 in his parents' basement in Aurora, Colorado. The label specializes in extreme and experimental varieties of heavy metal, and they have a history of signing bands that cultivate influence and devoted cult followings in the world of extreme music while being largely ignored by mainstream media, for instance Nile (now with Nuclear Blast), The Dillinger Escape Plan, Burnt by the Sun, Amorphis, Suffocation, Neurosis, Soilent Green, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Exhumed, and Mastodon. Relapse Records also operates a subsidiary label called Release Records, which specializes in ambient and noise music artists.
