Since the 1970s, Reggae Sunsplash has provided a place for reggae musicians and singers to come together to enjoy a reggaeful weekend of rhythm. People come from all over the world and gather on the Northern part of Jamaica to celebrate the reggae rhythm. As it is a very popular festival, it is exceptionally difficult to find available hotel space; however, this has not hindered the general populace from attending the festival. It has always been common Sunsplash tradition to camp out on the beaches of Jamaica.

The last Reggae Sunsplash Festival was held in 1999. In the year 2006 Reggae Sunsplash returned to Jamaica under new ownership with performances by Culture, Steel Pulse, Toots and the Maytals, Freddie McGregor, Morgan Heritage, Buju Banton, Beenie Man, Elephant Man, Diana King, Maxi Priest, Wyclef Jean, UB 40, Latin Reggae and Reggaeton star La Cubanasa Mey Vidal, and many others.
