Ranchi (Hindi: रांची) is the capital city of Jharkhand state, India. Ranchi was the center of the Jharkhand movement for a separate state for the tribal regions of South Bihar. Jharkhand was formed on 15 November 2000 by carving out the districts of Chota Nagpur and Santhal Parganas divisions of Bihar. As a part of Bihar, it used to be the summer capital from the time of the British Raj because of its cool climate.It is not very far from Rajrappa, another seminal place in the state of Jharkhand.

As per the current statistics Ranchi City's population stands at about 1.5 Million (1,500,000). Uptill 1958/1959 their was a lack of Hindu/Punjabi people in Ranchi until Jaganth Johar created such a community, which was adequately named Punjabi Hindu Bradhari and consequently he was president till 1971. The city has seen a sudden surge in population after the declaration of the new state in 2000. Owing to the rising employment opportunities and opening of numerous regional/state-level offices of banks, marekting companies etc. the city has witnessed a 50% growth in population.
Chhottanagpur consists of three smaller plateaus of Ranchi, Hazaribagh, and Koderma, and city of Ranchi is located at an altitude of 654 meters above sea level in the plateau of Ranchi. Ranchi was once the summer capital of Bihar. Subarnarekha river flows by the side of the city. The city as well as its immediate hinterland is endowed with several scenic spots.
Ranchi has a salubrious climate. Temperature ranges from maximum 37 to 20 °C during summer, and maximum 22 to 10 °C during winter. The annual rainfall is about 1530 mm.
Ranchi has a good a network of government and privately run schools, although standard of teaching considerably vary from school to school. Most of the government-run schools in Ranchi are affiliated to Jharkhand School Examination Board, whereas most of the private schools are affiliated to ICSE and CBSE boards. A number of schools are run by convents or by the Jesuits missionaries of the Roman Catholic, Gossenor, Evangelical and Lutheran Churches and the Church of North India. Most of the colleges and institutions of education of Ranchi are under the jurisdiction of Ranchi University.
As the institutions of higher studies fall short of city’s requirement, many students, after completing schooling in the state, move away to places like New Delhi, Karnataka and several other locations for higher technical and non-technical studies.

Ranchi has been good in Road connectivity with 3-4 National Highways crossing through or close to it. Recently the state government with the support of NHDC has constituted a plan to strengthen the Road connectivity of different district headquarters to this capital city with 4 laned highways of international standards. Ranchi has very good road connectivity with places like Jamshedpur (Tatanagar), Bokaro, Dhanbad, Daltonganj, Patna, Gaya and various Bihar towns. It also has inter-state connectivities to places like Kolkata, Durgapur/Asansol, Siliguri (Drajeeling), Cuttack, Rourkela, Bhubaneswar.
Ranchi has witnessed a tremendous growth of railway connectivity during the past 3-4 years. Growing demand and subsequent push grants in the railway annual budget made sure that Ranchi got its deserved piece of allocation. The Ranchi Airport (Code: IXR) is located in the Hinoo locality. It is approximately 7 km from the city center. The airport name is Bhagwan Birsa Munda Airport. There are regular flights to Delhi, Patna, Mumbai, Raipur and Kolkata.

On account of its historical position as an important administrative and military base of the eastern India during the British Raj, Ranchi developed as an important centre of trade and commerce, including a traditional base for sericulture and manufacture of shellac. Villages around Ranchi has been described as the 'vegetable bowl' of Jharkhand and truckloads of green vegetables are transported from the city to different parts of Jharkhand, Bihar, as also to Calcutta.
After India gained independence, Ranchi continued to grow and a number of industrial facilities were located in and around the city, and it emerged as an important industrial center. Along with other two industrial townships of Jamshedpur and Bokaro, it completes the industrial structure of Jharkhand. Major techno-industrial facilities of Ranchi include Heavy Engineering Corporation, Mecon, SAIL's R&D Facility, High Tension Insulator factory, CCL, CMPDI, IICM, USHA MARTIN, USHA BELTRON and Shipping Corporation of India.
Ranchi has some of the largest facilities for mentally-challenged patients at Kanke. There are three major hospitals taking care of patients with psychiatric illnesses.
1) Central Institute of Psychiarty, Kanke
2) RINPAS, Kanke
3) Davis Institute of Psychiatry, Kanke
The city is traditionally the medical centre for the entire region of about 400 km radius. Many hospitals both private and public dot the city.
The Rajnendra Medical College is the largest of three medical colleges in the state.
Excellent Neurodiagnostic facilites exist in the Advanced Diagnostic Centre.
The most famous Indian corporate hospital chain (Apollo Hospitals Group) runs a private hospital on the outskirts of the city. Though situated in a semi-rural setting, a world-class heart surgery * set-up is doing excellent work there.

Recently a new Urban complex coming up near Karamtoli has announced that it would have a Multiplex (built supposedly by INOX). In addition to this an Economy division of PVR Films has planned to open up a scaled down Multiplex in Ranchi. A megamall containing movie screens has also been announced by Pantaloon(Retail) India Ltd.
Ranchi has numeorus eateries offering delicacies from India and world. Recently lots of restaurant's (Capitol Hill, Thai Spice, Masala Bowl etc.) have been offering delicacies from Latin America / Mediterranean regions as well. There are already a huge no. of traditional Indian eateries like Kaveri, Punjab Sweets, Shiv Sagar Chain etc. that are great places for family outings.
