The Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB) is the UK's recognised national society for amateur radio operators.
= Role of the RSGB = The RSGB are the official body for the Amateur Radio enthusiasts. They act as an organisational body to help control Amateur Radio enthusiasts and act as a medium for communication between the enthusiasts and the UK Government.
The official UK Government body for regulating radio usage is OFCOM //www.ofcom.gov.uk, and along with them, the RSGB act as a consultant to new procedures in many areas – from decisions on licensing and bandwidth controls through to the use of ADSL over Power Lines (which it is thought would cause large amounts of Electromagnetic Noise.
RSGB also act as a parent organisation to many smaller groups and societies. Some of these societies unite local areas (such as repeater groups) or groups of individuals (such as Forces service groups, or old timer groups) or even people interested in a particular bandwidth (such as 2m groups).
They also provide a monthly magazine called Radcom
The Patron of the RSGB is HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
= History of the RSGB =
They also have competing demands from more and more non-amateur users of radio (for example mobile operators and wireless devices). Despite this they have been allocated generous amounts of bandwidth (both as primary and secondary usage) which they subdivide for their use. Over time, this changes.
The most major change coming up is due in October 2006 //www.rsgb.org.uk/news/licencechanges.htm. This is includes more bandwidth available for use to the lower license classes, as well as more the possibility of not having to log all use of the radio. Also included in the plans are the removal of the yearly license fee.
