PureVolume is a website for rising bands and musical artists to promote themselves. Each artist/band has its own miniature website which usually includes news, photos, upcoming shows, background/biographical information, contact information, and music for free listening and downloads. Over 250,000 artists house such profiles on PureVolume, most of whom hover around the rock genres, particularly alternative rock, indie rock, and punk rock and its subgenres.

PureVolume is promotional grounds for mostly fairly obscure, minor or up-and-coming artists, but also boasts a selection of signed mainstream bands as well, including Alkaline Trio, Atreyu, Jimmy Eat World, Relient K, Sum 41, Hot Water Music, Inner Surge, My Chemical Romance, Taking Back Sunday, Underoath, Fall Out Boy, Hawthorne Heights, Panic! At The Disco, Story of the Year, Equal, Audioslave, and Jack Johnson. PureVolume also hosts some well-known indie bands, such as Hellogoodbye and Daphne Loves Derby.

History

PureVolume was started as a college project by Nate, Mike and a few other college students. After seeing the popular MP3.com purchased and changed from a free indie-loving website to a mainstream album selling website, they decide to create a website that had the same features and hoped that it would catch on. PureVolume is owned and run by a small company called Unborn Media Inc.. The site was started with no outside funding and continues to be run this way. Purevolume also has its own blog which gives you updates behind the scenes. PureVolume currently runs its own label called One Big Spark (originally named Aramada Records) whose current signed artists are the electronic 80's glam-pop bands Rediscover and We Are The Fury.

Features

There are two types of accounts for artists: a free membership, and a paid Pro membership, as well as a free membership for a listener.

Artists can host mp3s and/or downloads, make friends with other artists, and list shows and events.

A listener's membership gives you the ability to create your own user profile, start a blog & photo album, leave comments (on both artists' and listeners' pages) or add friends, and post on the forums. Listeners can pick their favorite artists which will be displayed on their profile. Whenever one of their favorite artists adds a new show, blog entry, or song, a notice will appear on their member home.

To see if other listeners are similar, users have a list of their favorite genres as well as tags on their profile that others can search for.

On Purevolume's mainpage, bands can be featured either by paying for a "Pure Promo" or chosen by the Purevolume staff for a "Pure Pick".

Purevolume also features charts of rising unsigned artists as well as charts for signed artists. These charts are broken up by most popular artist by profile visit and most popular artist by songs downloaded. The charts are also split into different music genre categories.
