The Prime Minister of Jamaica is Jamaica's head of government, currently Portia Simpson-Miller. Portia Simpson-Miller was elected as the new leader of the governing PNP and succeeded P. J. Patterson to become Jamaica's first female Prime Minister on 30 March 2006. *
As is the case with most democratic nations that follow the Westminster system of the parliamentary system, the Prime Minister is usually the leader of the majority party in the lower house of parliament, the House of Representatives.
The Prime Minister is formally appointed into office by the Governor General of Jamaica, who represents Elizabeth II, the Queen of Jamaica.
