Prakrti or Prakriti (from Sanskrit language) is, according to samkhya philosophy, the basic matter of which the universe consists. It is composed of the three gunas: tamas (ignorance), rajas (passion) and sattva (goodness).

It is described in Bhagavad Gita as an inferior type of energy to the living beings (jivas), and to the Supreme Person (Bhagavan). It is closely associated with the concept of Maya within Vedic scripture.
