A platter lift, or just platter, is a mechanised system for pulling skiers uphill. In Europe the lift is known as button lift or Poma lift (after the company * who first made them, although they now make a wide range of other lifts). People may call them (in French) Tire-Fesses (Literally Meaning Bottom Puller)
The lift consists an aerial steel rope loop running over a series of wheels, powered by an engine at the upper end. Hanging from the rope overhead are equally-spaced vertical cables attached to a plastic button or platter that is placed between the skiers legs and pulls the skier uphill. Snowboarders place the platter behind the top of their front leg and hold it in position with their hands. Attempting to be pulled up just holding on with the arms is tiring and makes balancing more difficult.
