- In geology or earth science, a plateau is an area of uplift. If the uplift was recent, the area may be relatively flat. If it is highly eroded - a dissected plateau - it may have sharp relief.
- In physiology and human sexuality, plateau refers to the second stage (of four) of sexual arousal in the currently accepted Masters and Johnson model.
- As a proper name, Plateau usually refers to the Belgian mathematician Joseph Plateau (October 14, 1801-September 15, 1883)
