Pick-up is a slang term that is commonly used in a gaming context. Pick-up can generally be used to describe anything that you collect whilst engaged in the gaming experience, ranging from extra lives, to more menial collectibles such as coins (Mario) and bananas (Donkey Kong).
They are generally useful to your quest, by providing you with the ability to reach somewhere else in the game, or giving you more lives. Platform games are often centred around the sole objective of collecting certain pick-ups, alongside simply reaching the end of the level.
Pick-up groups (PUG) are random gatherings of players in an online gaming community where captains are chosen. The teams are chosen by these captains.
