Phoenicianism is a form of Lebanese nationalism that emphasizes the pre-Arab and Phoenician origins of the Lebanese. The term, sometimes used as an ideological epithet, is beginning to regain some credibility after a long period of ideological suppression. This includes four centuries of Ottoman rule and more recently Syrian occupation (1975-2005). Some Lebanese have reservations identifying themselves as Phoenician as this ethnic definition is not seen as entirely inclusive. However, other Lebanese are seen to retain vestiges of a Phoenician ethnic identity.*.
