Patrice Chéreau (born November 2nd, 1944 in Lézigné, France) is a French opera and theatre director, film maker, actor, and producer.
Biography
- Patrice Chéreau went to school in Paris. At an early age he became well-known to Parisian critics as director, actor, and stage manager at his high-school theatre. With 15 years of age he was enthusiastically celebrated a theatre prodigy.
- 1964 being 19 years old he already was a director at a professional theatre.
- 1966 he created a very busy Public-Theatre at the Parisian suburb of Sartrouville.
- since 1970 a close relationship was established with the Milano Piccolo-Teatro, Paolo Grassi and Giorgio Strehler
- 1975 he worked in Germany for the first time directing Edward Bond's Lear.
- 1969 he put his first opera on stage.
One of his biggest successes was his 1976 staging of Richard Wagner's tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Bayreuth Festival, in a centennial production conducted by Pierre Boulez.
