Paper engineering encompasses the design and analysis of the equipment and processes that are used in the manufacture of paper. The field encompasses the preparation of fibrous materials from (usually) trees via a pulping process, chemical and mechanical pretreatment of the fibers in a fluid suspension, the forming and dewatering of a web on a paper machine, and the post-treatment of the sheet with coating, calendering, and other mechanical processes.

Paper making is not chemical engineering. On the contrary, the paper industry is a client of the chemical industry.

Paper engineering - mechanical books encompasses the craft and science of designing and constructng mechanical books out of paper. These books are usually aimed at younger audiences, however there have been several examplaes of mechanical books for grown ups.

Paper engineering - Paper Machines encompasses the craft and science of designing and constructng mechanical machines out of paper. These machines are driven by a hand powered crank and actual mechanical components (for example, levers, cams, gears, and pistons) - entirely made of paper. They are technically automata but are also called "Paper Animations". A term coined for them by Noted Co. when they introduced Rob Ives' Flying Pig paper kits to USA.
