For the German band named after the district, see Pankow (German band). For the Italian band of the same name, see Pankow (Italian band) Pankow is a borough of Berlin. In 2001, it was merged with the former boroughs of Prenzlauer Berg and Weißensee; the resulting borough retained the name Pankow. It encompasses an area of 103.07 km² and has, as of 2003, about 347,100 inhabitants. Its current mayor is Burkhard Kleinert (PDS).

In the early days of East Germany, Pankow was the home to many members of the government. Western writers therefore often referred to Pankow as shorthand for the East German regime.
